September 2006 28.9.2006 18:48 MP BACKS NEW LAW AGAINST AGE DISCRIMINATION The biggest shake up in workplace anti-discrimination laws for over twenty five years will come into force on 1st October, when the government banns discrimination on the grounds of age. Sex and race discrimination have long been illegal but now, for the first time, older workers up to 65 will get similar protection. And that’s good news for thousands people in Inverclyde. 28.9.2006 11:24 2000 INVERCLYDE WORKERS TO BENEFIT FROM MINIMUM WAGE Over 2,000 local workers in Inverclyde are set to see their pay packets rise in October when the National Minimum Wage is increased to £5.35 per hour. The National Minimum Wage, which was introduced by the Labour Government in 1999, has risen steadily every year and is now almost 50% higher than when it was introduced seven years ago. 28.9.2006 11:13 CHILDREN’S CAR SEATS GET A BOOST David believes the new rules will save the lives of children in Inverclyde: “I’ve never been a fan of the ‘nanny state’ and I do not believe that it is the job of Government to tell people how to look after their children, but I am backing the new law on children’s car seats. Every year 2,000 children in the UK are killed or injured in motor accidents, simply because they are not sitting in a proper child car seat. |
