The energy giants’ change of heart followed a long-running campaign by housing associations throughout the UK, and means that all six big power companies now charge prepay customers the same as those paying via quarterly bills. The McCallum’s were at Downing Street as part of a Community Heroes reception, honouring individuals who have gone that extra mile to be involved in their local communities. 26.3.2010 13:43 NEW ORDER FOR SHIPYARDS WILL HELP SECURE 500 INVERCLYDE JOBS News that BAE Systems won the contract to design new Type 26 anti-submarine frigates has been welcomed by Inverclyde’s Labour MP David Cairns. The four year project will involve 300 engineers and around 100 of them will be based at Govan and Scotstoun. The Glasgow yards are already building Type 45 destroyers and the aircraft carriers and the new order, worth a total of £4 billion, would guarantee work for another 15 years. 22.3.2010 13:01 HIGH LEVEL TALKS ON FUTURE OF NAVY BUILDINGS Talks on the future of the Navy Buildings stepped up a gear when local Labour MP David Cairns met Captain Peter Merriman, Commander of the Clyde Naval Base. The pair met on site at Eldon Street to discuss the ongoing consultation on the future of the Navy Buildings. David raised the issue during a House of Commons debate on a bill to introduce a Grocery Market Ombudsman. He pointed out that people in Inverclyde have to pay more for their petrol than those living in more prosperous areas due to the fact that the supermarkets and large petrol companies operate a local pricing policy that keeps prices higher than they should be. 5.3.2010 10:46 MP AND MSP MEET ENGINEERING APPRENTICES AT GLASGOW AIRPORT Local MP David Cairns and Duncan McNeil MSP met Inverclyde apprentice engineers Darren Laughlin and David Struthers during a recent visit to British Airways Maintenance at Glasgow Airport. Both lads are third year engineering technician apprentices, and fought off stiff competition from over 300 other applicants of win places on BA’s coveted apprenticeship scheme. All of British Airways planes used within the UK, including Boeing 737s and the Airbus fleet, are maintained at Glasgow Airport 4.3.2010 14:06 DAVID PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR BRITISH ARMED FORCES Inverclyde Labour MP, David Cairns, met with a delegation from The Royal British Legion to get behind the charity’s call for general election candidates to support the whole Armed Forces family.
