June 2006 21.6.2006 09:21 DAVID BACKS CALL FOR WORKERS TO GET MORE TIME OFF Hard pressed Inverclyde workers could find themselves with up to 8 days extra holiday every year thanks to a proposal from the Westminster government. The Department of Trade and Industry is considering raising the minimum four weeks annual leave that full time workers are entitled to. This would mean that someone working a five day week would see their holiday entitlement rise from 20 day to 28 day each year. 14.6.2006 10:19 FAIRTRADE COMMITTEE LEARNS FROM PAISLEY’S EXPERIENCE Inverclyde Fairtrade campaigners are aiming to learn from their colleagues in Paisley and were delighted when Maureen Brough, Chairperson of the Paisley Fairtrade Partnership, came along to address their meeting. Paisley already has full Fairtrade status and Maureen, who was involved with the Paisley campaign from the beginning, was happy to share her experience with fellow Fairtrade volunteers in Inverclyde. 12.6.2006 12:29 MP SEEKS ASSURANCES ON KEY ASPECTS OF HOUSING STOCK TRANSFER Inverclyde MP David Cairns has met with the head of River Clyde Homes, Karen Neary to seek assurances on some key aspects of the proposed transfer of Council houses to the new housing association if tenants vote yes in the November ballot. The meeting took place in the River Clyde Homes offices in Clyde Square. 12.6.2006 10:50 CAIRNS CALLS FOR PICTURE WARNING ON CIGARETTE PACKETS Local doctors in Inverclyde have been invited to take part in a UK wide consultation on new health warnings for cigarette packets, by Labour MP David Cairns. The Westminster Government is considering replacing the written warnings on cigarette packets with hard hitting pictures, and David is canvassing local GPs and consultants so he can present an Inverclyde wide response to the consultation. 7.6.2006 10:10 WE NEED TO LOOK AFTER INVERCLYDE’S CARERS SAYS LOCAL MP Local MP, David Cairns, is joining forces with Inverclyde Carer’s Centre and lending his support to the 12th annual Carers’ Week (12th-18th June). This year’s theme is looking after carers and David is throwing his weight behind their campaign for regular health checks for carers. 2.6.2006 07:59 CAIRNS BACKS BID TO TRACK DOWN MISSING VOTERS After pleas at the start of the year by Labour’s representatives on the Renfrewshire Joint Valuation Board, the committee has had a change of heart and will, after all, conduct a door to door canvass in Inverclyde to track down the 6,000 – 8,000 people missing from the voters’ roll. The canvass will take place in the late summer and means that the missing electors will be on the roll in time for next year’s May elections. |
