MORE PROTECTION FOR INVERCLYDE CONSUMERS ON THE WAY
At the moment customers can cancel a contract within 7 days if they are cold called by a salesman. But if you arrange for someone to come to your house, you don’t have the same rights. Inverclyde Labour MP David Cairns doesn’t think this is fair and that’s why he’s backing the Government’s proposal to extend the same protection to everyone. The Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform is consulting on the proposals right now, and David wants local people to get in touch and tell them what they think. You can find out more at www.berr.gov.uk/consultations/page44191.html and responses can be sent by letter or email. Closing date for the consultation is 22nd April.

LAND GIRLS' CONTRIBUTIONS TO WAR EFFORT RECOGNISED
During the dark days of the Second World War, hundreds of women from Inverclyde worked hard to provide food and timber for the nation. They were members of the Women’s Land Army and Women’s Timber Corps, better known as Land Girls and Lumber Jills. Many worked on surrounding farms, while others went further afield ending up felling timber in the Highlands. The war couldn’t have been won without them, and now their efforts are being acknowledged with a special badge from the UK Government.

PLANS FOR GREENOCK TOWN CENTRE INVESTMENT
Plans to modernise and extend Greenock Town Centre have received a warm welcome from Inverclyde’s Labour MP David Cairns. At a recent meeting Oak Mall manager, Phil Chapman, filled David in on the details of exciting new plans for £17 million worth of modernisation and improvements. Changes on the cards include a new glass fronted entrance at West Burn Street due for completion before Christmas, an additional 45,000 square feet of retail space linking Hamilton Gate with Dalrymple Street and parking for 300 plus cars.

INVERCLYDE FIRMS CAN COMPETE WITH THE BEST
Could a company in Inverclyde win the coveted title of ‘Best UK Business’? Local Labour MP David Cairns definitely thinks so and he is encouraging firms in Inverclyde to enter this year’s Manufacturing Excellence Awards. Dubbed the Oscars of the business world, the competition is sponsored by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and is free to enter. A £20,000 prize of free business advice is on offer to the winner and entries close at the end of February.
