DAVID CONDEMNS THE RISING TIDE OF HOME REPOSSESSIONS
Local Labour MP, David Cairns, is supporting his parliamentary colleagues on the Treasury Select Committee who have condemned the rising tide of repossessions in the UK. A recent report from the Committee highlighted a worrying increase in repossessions and some mortgage lenders are turning to repossession as a first resort, rather than a last one. The Committee was also concerned about the high administration fees charged to customers who default on their repayments. Estimates suggest around 400, 000 UK homeowners were behind with their mortgage in March of this year.

INVERCLYDE INTERN SPENDS SUMMER AT WESTMINSTER
Inverclyde teenager, Heather Purdie, has just completed a summer internship at the House of Commons, with local MP, David Cairns. The 18-year-old from Greenock joined David at Westminster for 2 months, learning about the workings of the parliament and helping out with the day-to-day running of David’s office.

CONCERN AT CUTBACK ON DOORSTEP VOTER REGISTRATION CANVASSES
Local Labour MP, David Cairns, is urging electors to make sure they register to vote when the annual canvass forms drop through their letter boxes. In a change to previous years, the two door to door canvasses will be combined into one exercise in mid October and David is worried that this may lead to a drop in voter registration.

MAKE INVERCLYDE’S BUILDING SITES SAFER SAYS CAIRNS
Labour MP, David Cairns, is calling for more protection for construction workers throughout Inverclyde. David hopes that the findings of a new report, One Death is Too Many, will prompt the Government to tighten up health and safety rules. Recommendations include a full time Minister for Construction to oversee developments in the industry and implement standardised, tough new health and safety regulations. Construction is the most dangerous industry in Britain with an average of six deaths every month.

CUSTOMERS WHO PAY IN ADVANCE MUST GET MORE PROTECTION
According to a recent Consumer Focus report, 1 in 50 people in Inverclyde has lost around £242 of their hard earned cash because a company has gone out of business before they delivered the goods. And now Inverclyde Labour MP David Cairns is calling on the Government to act decisively to ensure that customers who pay in advance get their money back, should a company goes bust.

LOCAL MP CALLS ON EMPLOYERS TO HELP YOUNG PEOPLE INTO WORK
Inverclyde MP David Cairns is supporting a new government initiative aimed at getting unemployed youngsters back into work. ‘Backing Young Britain’ sets out plans to encourage employers, businesses and charities to engage with youngsters in their area and provide them with a work place or training. The scheme will be financially backed by the government’s ‘Future Jobs Fund’ and is applicable primarily to those aged 18 to 24 who have been unemployed for approximately 12 months.
